Homage inscription on supraporte

Freigelegtes WandgemäldeMural, second-oldest layer of paint, uncovered in 2005, Photo: Karl-Heinz Stadtler

Two Hessian lions hold the plaque with the inscription ‘Ludwig’ in Hebrew script.
Ludwig I (1806-1830) , Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, reigned when the synagogue was inaugurated. This mural was uncovered during the renovation.

Crowned lions with double tails and swollen chests were common during the era of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Here is a drawing of the coat of arms of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1831.
