The latest film by director Wolfgang Becker from 2025
is being screened by the Förderkreis as part of its “Tuesday Movie at the Synagogue” series. For licensing reasons, the title cannot be used in promotional materials.
In his new—and final—film, Becker, who passed away shortly after filming wrapped, portrays a protagonist who becomes entangled in a lie. Together with screenwriter Constantin Lieb, he adapted Maxim Leo’s 2022 novel of the same name about a Berlin video store owner in financial straits who is suddenly and unjustly celebrated as a courageous freedom activist. With a great deal of irony, the story explores recent German culture of remembrance. How does historiography work? What are we willing to believe? And do we absolutely need people we can idealize and put on a pedestal—regardless of whether they truly deserve it? Thanks to Charly Hübner, who lends the antihero a deeply charming quality, and the supporting cast featuring Christiane Paul, Leonie Benesch, and Eva Löbau, the result is both a deeply empathetic film—and a worthy legacy from a significant director.
Admission is free, donations are welcome.
