Versal Buchstabe Anyone who walks through Vöhl with their eyes open will still find traces of Jewish life. Names like those of Abraham Katzenstein and Selig Frankenthal have been carved into the door of an old blacksmith's shop alongside those of Christian farmers; there's the inscription in Hebrew characters above the door of a house that belonged to the Schaumburg merchant family in the 19th century; and, of course, there's the Jewish cemetery in Herzingsgrube and the former synagogue.

There is no fee. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Author reading and discussion with Prof. Dr. S. Koller

It was a world that will never rise again – the world of the Jewish shtetl. Until the Nazi era, more than four-fifths of all Jews in Europe lived in Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine and neighbouring areas.

The shtetls went up in flames, countless massacres were committed, millions of Jews were murdered. The writer Dovid Bergelson, who came from the shtetl of Ochrimovo in northern Ukraine and wrote in Yiddish, survived this period in the Soviet Union.

With a new edition of his stories entitled ‘Die Welt möge Zeuge sein’ (Let the world be witness), Sabine Koller, professor of Slavic-Jewish studies in Regensburg, now makes it possible once again to listen to the lost world of Eastern European Jewry and the Yiddish language. The village synagogue in Vöhl, restored by a citizens' initiative and converted into a cultural centre, provides the perfect setting for this.

On the (pre-)Easter days of 1945 - 80 years ago - the Second World War came to an end for the communities of today's Waldeck-Frankenberg district. The war had been associated with death and destruction, hardship and misery. Some history buffs and Jewish descendants from our region would like to commemorate these days with a book.

continue

Dr. Marion Lilienthal from Korbach, Heinrich Figge from Höringhausen, Ernst Klein from Volkmarsen, Karl-Hermann Völker and Dr. Horst Hecker for Frankenberg, Dr. Heinrich Knoche and Karl-Heinz Stadtler from Vöhl have taken on this topic. Johannes Grötecke also gave descendants of Jews from Bad Wildungen the opportunity to describe how their parents or grandparents experienced the “Third Reich” and built up a new existence in a foreign country after emigrating. Carol Davidson Baird from the USA, Michael Dimor from Israel and Ruben Herzberg, a descendant of Vöhl Jews, will tell the story of their ancestors. Prof. Dr. Dietfrid Krause-Vilmar has agreed to present the book to the public. Sahra Küpfer, music teacher and board member of the Förderkreis since its foundation, will create a festive setting with her songs. It will be possible to purchase the book on this “first publication day”.

The Sedaa group has been visiting the synagogue since 2011.

They are the musicians:
Naraa Naranbaatar - throat singing, undertone singing,
Omid Bahadori - guitar, drum, undertone singing
