The Förderkreis Synagoge Vöhl e.V. is looking for six school pupils for a two-week holiday job during the 2026 summer holidays. Are you at least 15 years old and attending secondary school, or at least 17 years old and attending grammar school or vocational school in Vöhl or a neighbouring municipality, and looking for an exciting job for the summer holidays? Are you a team player, enjoy working with people and interested in your region? Would you like to contribute your skills to a dedicated team? Are you interested in training for project and oral exams as well as job interviews? Then apply now!
This year, we’ve found someone who’s an expert in artificial intelligence: AI trainer Konrad Rennert from Felsberg. He’ll teach our messengers how to use AI responsibly.
The project is funded by the Waldeck-Frankenberg Network for Tolerance as part of the federal program “Demokratie leben!” by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs and as part of the state program “Hessen aktiv für Demokratie, gegen Extremismus” by the State of Hesse.
From May 8 to 23, the district, in collaboration with the Arolsen Archives, is calling on people to participate.
The aim is to create a digital memorial to those persecuted by the Nazis. This will enable future generations to remember the names and identities of the victims. It is a crowdsourcing project in which volunteers transfer the names, places of birth and other information from historical documents about the victims of National Socialism into digital form.
Svenja Heinze, staff member from the Arolsen Archives will provide an introduction to the project’s steps and will be available to answer questions. Anyone can participate using their own laptop, and together we can help complete the Arolsen Archives’ online archive.
The screen in the synagogue displays a presentation listing the names of 800 Holocaust victims from across the county.

© Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg, Fachdienst Ländlicher RaumStudents in grades 8–10 at Ederseeschule Herzhausen are performing this play under the direction of Stephan Rumphorst at the Korbacher Theaterwochen. Dramaturgical guidance: Karl-Heinz Stadtler (Förderkreis Synagoge Vöhl).
The Vöhl Synagogue and the Edersee School in Herzhausen have joined forces to bring the life story of a Jewish man from Vöhl to the stage. All the historical facts are accurate; the cast and director have simply taken some creative liberties here and there to make the story flow more smoothly.
In the play, the Jewish character Max Mildenberg becomes Max Blumberg, who grows up in good neighborly and friendly relations with the Protestant Klaus at the beginning of the 20th century. Together they play soccer and sing in the men’s choir. But then the Nazis come to power, and their friendship is put to a severe test.

The Friends Association is co-hosting a film event in Korbach. Following “Walter Kaufmann: What a Life!”, the program now features the multi-award-winning documentary “We Are Jews in Breslau” by Karin Kaper and Dirk Szuszies. It tells the story of young survivors and their fates after 1933. Director Karin Kaper will be present to discuss the film and answer questions. The Jewish community in Breslau was the third largest in Germany, after Frankfurt and Berlin.

is the motto of the exhibition: Still, the night is starry. In 2003, the idea arose of creating works of art from the waste boards of the star dome. The star idea was “scattered” to artists from near and far, and the boards returned as works of art.
We are now showing the exhibition from 2005 for the fourth time. International artists participated at that time, and we are able to display all of their artworks except for one exception.

The Felsberg Jewish Liberal Congregation Emet weSchalom e.V. Northern Hesse (Hebrew for “Truth and Peace”) is a progressive Jewish community based in Felsberg that serves the Northern Hesse region. A picture of their synagogue is shown at the top of this page.
On Friday, the day before Shabbat, they will visit the former synagogue in Vöhl.
Since Jewish holidays begin on the evening of the previous day, the congregation will hold a Jewish service—a Kabbalat Shabbat (Hebrew for “welcoming the Sabbath”)—at 6:00 p.m. in the former Vöhl Synagogue, followed by a Kiddush and a communal meal. Annette Wissing will lead the service. Everyone is warmly invited to attend. Men are asked to wear head coverings.
nyone who walks through Vöhl with their eyes open will still find traces of Jewish life. Names like those of Abraham Katzenstein and Selig Frankenthal have been carved into the door of an old blacksmith's shop alongside those of Christian farmers; there's the inscription in Hebrew characters above the door of a house that belonged to the Schaumburg merchant family in the 19th century; and, of course, there's the Jewish cemetery in Herzingsgrube and the former synagogue.

t the Jewish cemetery in Herzingsgrube, Karl-Heinz Stadtler talks about the history of the burial site and Jewish burial rites. He introduces individual gravestones and the people buried there, recounting tragic deaths and humorous incidents.

Jewish citizens were part of the community of Vöhl. They were merchants and traders, and unlike in many other parts of Germany, they often had small farms and worked as craftsmen. But there were also soap boilers and ash collectors, dyers and rag pickers.

This postcard was sent to Brussels in 1907 by a guest of the Hotel Prinz-Wilhelm. At the bottom of the postcard is written “Published by M. Rothschild in Vöhl.” The Jewish innkeeper Moritz Rothschild had already died in 1907, and the Prinz Wilhelm was run by his son Alfred Rothschild.
The picture shows a view of the village, where houses belonging to Jewish citizens are part of the townscape. Next to the “Hotel Prinz-Wilhelm - Pension für Sommerfrischler - Telephon im Hause”, the house owned at the time by the Jew Emanuel Katzenstein can be seen. On the right, the “Alte Post” can be seen.

In the former worship hall, we will simultaneously project 770 names of Holocaust victims from Waldeck-Frankenberg onto a screen.
The highlight will be the screening of the including play rehearsed by the Lebenshilfe Waldeck-Frankenberg theatre group under the direction of Sonja Schmitt-Zenker. The title: ‘Broken Lives’. Afterwards, following a short keynote speech, we would like to discuss with you, our guests, whether commemorations such as ours are still appropriate and perhaps even necessary at a time when the American president only wants to remember the heroic chapters of his country's history.
Sahra Küpfer and Ellen Glotz will provide musical accompaniment for the event.
"No one has the right to obey!”
Friends become enemies
The first sentence is a quote from Hannah Ahrendt referring to the Eichmann trial in Israel; Eichmann, like many perpetrators, explained his criminal actions by saying that he was only following orders.
Pupils from the Ederseeschule Herzhausen perform a play directed by Stephan Rumphorst.
With the participation of children's songwriter Beate Lambert. She has traveled throughout the German-speaking world as a children's songwriter. She now works as a poet and seminar leader and will sing two songs during the performance.
Stephan Rumphorst wrote the play based on the biographies of Jews from Vöhler. It depicts what really happened. It shows how people changed their behaviour towards Jews, how singing brothers, sports comrades and good friends could actually become opponents and enemies.
In the upper classes of the Ederseeschule Herzhausen, eight girls and four boys have agreed to perform in the play. Several meetings have already taken place with the experienced theatre professional Rumphorst. The school management and teachers are doing their utmost to support the project. And we, the board of Förderkreis Synagoge in Vöhl, are delighted about this very special project.
On Friday, 27 February, there will be two screenings in the synagogue in the morning exclusively for pupils of the Ederseeschule.

With plenty of humour, the film tells the story of how a Holocaust survivor finds a new home in Germany after decades abroad. For licensing reasons, the title cannot be mentioned in the announcement.

On February 4, 2026, Heinrich Figge from Höringhausen died at the age of 89. He was closely associated with our support group and was a dedicated researcher of Jewish life in his hometown. He contributed to several joint publications. He made his documents on Jewish life in Höringhausen available to us.
When we purchased the synagogue in 1999 and restored it in the following years, he agreed to craft a wrought-iron candlestick based on a design by Jewish architect Thea Altaras. He presented it to us as a gift. The chandelier will always remind us of this generous and wonderful man.
